Report reports growth in egg sales in China
The latest report by Reportlinker.com states following agricultural liberalization, farmers have begun to establish battery farming operations and small holdings that boost hen egg production in China to over 43.7% of the world’s total in 2007.
According to the report, dairy, pre-packaged food and bakery have boosted egg usage and consumption.
The market is becoming more sophisticated with so-called ‘energy’ and ‘health’ eggs appearing on the market.
During the review period, total volume consumption of eggs rose by 27% to reach 635 billion eggs by end 2008.
This is a slower growth rate than retail volumes (which grew by 116% over the 2002 to 2008 period), indicating that retail sales are representing an increasing proportion of eggs sold, compared to catering sales and consumption through food processors.
Per capita consumption of eggs in 2008 reached 468 eggs, or about 29kg.
