New report on value-added disposal and utilization of dairy permeate

Dairy permeates can be commercially exploited as a rich source of carbohydrates instead of being treated as ‘waste’, according to a report by Dairymark.com.

It highlights developments in technology that are providing new and more commercial options for dairy permeate handling and processing, and points to the growing demand for a range of non-traditional value-added products in industry sectors such as food, feed and pharmaceutical.

Entitled ‘Target business opportunities’, the report discusses issues such as new technology that allows the drying of highly hygroscopic (readily absorbing moisture) dairy permeate, decalcification as a means of improving the quality of both lactose and permeate for further processing and applications for mother liquor arising from lactose manufacture.
