Frost & Sullivan recognizes encapsulation technology

FrieslandCampina Kievit receives the Frost & Sullivan 2009 Global Infant Nutrition Technology Innovation Award for a micro-encapsulation technique. This micro-encapsulate enables the incorporation of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in infant formulae that are devoid of proteins and other milk-derived allergens. Launched in 2008, the technology facilitates the addition of encapsulated long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) such as arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in hypoallergenic infant formulae. FrieslandCampina Kievit has therefore developed ‘Vana-Sana DHA 7 IF protein free’ for use in hypoallergenic infant formulae.

This solves a major problem of oxidation and stability issues associated with the incorporation of functional ingredients such as ARA and DHA into the fat blend, as LC-PUFA oil is spray-dried in a microencapsulated and very stable form before being added. LC-PUFAs play a major role in the development of the brain and eyes in infants with supplementary advantages for infants suffering from allergies.
