FDA approves BASF superabsorbents for indirect food contact

BASF’s Luquasorb FP 800 has been approved for use by the FDA for indirect contact with poultry, meat, fish, and fruit and vegetables. The superabsorbents or filler granules can be used in soaker pads for blood or watery juices. Made from crosslinked polyacrylates, they can bind to liquid more than 500 times their weight.

Superabsorbents have traditionally been used to make hygiene products. Another use is as water-blocking coatings for underwater cables.
