China receives specialized training program on melamine analysis in milk products

Dated: 1 November 2008

Agilent Technologies has created a specialized training program in October to address the recent melamine crisis in China. The four-day training program covers melaminetesting methods using new, specialized sample-preparation components on gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/ MS), liquid chromatograph (LC), and liquid chromatograph/ triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC/MS/MS) instruments. A spokesperson for Agilent says the initial demand that came within days of the outbreak in China was for instruments and sample-preparation materials. Sample preparation uses a solid-phase extraction method in which contaminants are isolated from food samples prior to analysis. Agilent scientists worked with Chinese chemists to develop the sample preparation method needed to separate melamine from dairy products. Melamine is an organic chemical commonly used in plastics and fertilizers. It can be added to milk and other food products to create a false increase in the measurement of protein content. Melamine was recently the cause for the widespread occurrence of kidney stones and cases of kidney failure in China.
