Natural astaxanthin improves gastric health

Dated: 17 October 2008

A newly published randomised, double-blind and placebo controlled study of 132 patients shows treatment with AstaREAL to dyspeptic patients alleviated heartburn.

The study, conducted by researchers in Lithuania, Sweden and Denmark, showed that a strong placebo effect supplementation with AstaREAL significantly reduced dyspeptic symptoms like heartburn.

The positive effect of astaxanthin was pronounced in people infected with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium that causes stomach ulcers and cancer.

Infection of Helicobacter pylori is known to generate a strong inflammation response in the gastric lining in connection with oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is also thought to be one of the major causes to heartburn and reflux.

The current result published in the June issue of Phytomedicine is supported by earlier findings from animal studies and human pilot study in connection with H. pylori infection and gastric inflammation showing that astaxanthin has a strong in vivo antioxidant effect and thereby also possesses anti-inflammatory properties.

Other human clinical studies have shown that AstaREAL also has a role to play in sport nutrition, eye- and skin health.

The underlying mechanism to the different indications is the antioxidant properties of astaxanthin to protect the cells all around in our body against oxidative stress.

AstaREAL is produced and supplied by BioReal (Sweden) AB, part of Fuji Chemical Industry Group.

The products are approved for use in nutritional supplements in the US, Europe, Japan and other countries.
