The consumption of health food continues to grow in Southeast Asia as more become aware that what they eat affects their health in the long run.
Aiding to this growth is the steady rise in living standards and education levels, which translates into more demand for health food. Food ingredients such as low-calorie sweeteners, fat-reduced proteins and desaltifiers are playing a major role in this development in Thailand. Food processors are also showing more interest in the health food sector.
Says Yuthasak Supasorn, president of the National Food Institute (NFI): “Last year, food exports were valued at over 600,000 million baht ($17,717.82 million), with over 300,000 million baht accounting for processed food products. These numbers have been on the rise for the last six years. Despite the global food crisis and reduced export volume during the first five months of this year, export value continued to rise because of the rise in food prices.”
“Health food is the most prominent trend in the food ingredients industry today. We aim to have more than 70% of Thai food producers qualified to meet international production standards within four years, as well as to help them enter this global market more efficiently.”
Organized by CMP Information, Food Ingredients Asia 2008 will be held from September 24 to 26 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand.
