Ice-cream boxes production system with IML technology

OIMA, the leading manufacturer of high-performance packaging injection moulding machines of SACMI Group, has recently developed, in close partnership with key technological partners, an integrated production system for the injection moulding of food containers with IML labelling.

The system entered in production in Pastena, Italy early this year, and produces simultaneously containers and lids for ice-cream boxes.

They can be made in a range of sizes (570 ml, 1000 ml and 2000 ml) and have a production cycle time of about six seconds (for the largest container), granting output rates of up to 600 complete boxes per hour.

The core of this integrated production system is the OiMA STRATOS 2220.300 KP machine, with a clamping force of 300 tons.

The special two-cavity mould (box and lid) is made of two different moulds, coupled by means of a special hotrunner plate with feeding and balancing features.

A dedicated In Mould Labelling (IML) automation with side-entry robot, provides simultaneously the positioning of labels in both the box and the lid cavities, and the simultaneous pick-up of moulded parts.

Before being placed in the mould, the labels are electrostatically charged, ensuring the labels remain correctly positioned in the cavity when released by the robot punches.
