The H. J. Heinz Company is expanding its nonprofit Micronutrient Campaign to India, where it hopes to benefit more than six million children through the distribution of single-serve packets containing microencapsulated nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
In a joint attempt with the Indian government and Helen Keller International to combat malnutrition and anemia, Heinz has committed $7 million to the campaign, which uses a unique microencapsulated nutrient powder that does not affect the taste of food.
Compliance with traditional methods of delivering these nutrients, such as liquid drops, is low because they taste unpleasant and stain teeth.
The nutrients can be mixed into any food, including staples such as rice, maize or pureed fruits and vegetables.
More than one million children around the world have benefited from the program and Heinz intends to help 10 million children by 2010.
