Thermo Fisher develops methods for tracing prohibited additive in seafood
Dated: 14 September 2007
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. said it has developed three food-testing methods that can trace dangerous food additives recently found in seafood imported from China.
The company said that the analytical technology of the mass spectrometers with Highly Selective Reaction Monitoring (H-SRM) allow for trace-level analysis of complex samples such as animal tissue and can be used to detect nitrofuran, malachite green and chloramphenicol.
On June 28, the US Food and Drug Administration banned the import of certain fish species from China because of possible contamination with drugs and unsafe food additives — including nitrofuran, malachite green and chloramphenicol — which are prohibited in food products for human consumption.
Thermo Fisher said the ban has stimulated significant interest in the development of analytical methods for detecting trace levels of these substances in food.
