US demand for active and intelligent packaging to grow 13 percent annually

Dated: 7 September 2007

A new study has shown that demand for active and intelligent packaging is estimated to climb 13 percent annually to $1.1 billion in 2011, fueled by the development of new-generation products with improved performance at more cost-competitive prices.

US-based market research firm, The Freedonia Group, said that food and beverages are the two largest markets for such packaging, accounting for a combined 72 percent of demand in 2006.

Food applications will be driven by the need to maintain longer shelf life with processed foods and packaged fresh foods, which will bode well for active packaging such as oxygen scavengers and ethylene scavenging films.

Growing awareness of intelligent packaging as tools in improving food safety and reducing temperature abuse will also boost demand for the segment which includes compliance monitoring packaging for pharmaceuticals, ripeness detecting labels and thermochromic labels.
