Study: Orange juice good for diabetics

Dated: 23 July 2007

Though high in sugar, diabetics may still be able to consider orange juice a part of their diet because it contains huge amounts of flavonoids, according to a study by endocrinologists at the University at Buffalo.

The study, which appeared in the June 2007 issue of Diabetes Care, showed that two types of flavonoids in orange juice – hesperetin and naringenin – inhibited the generation of oxygen-free radicals, which can damage components of the cell, contributing to the development of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

"Our data is relevant to patients with diabetes because stress from (destructive oxygen free radicals) and inflammation are increased significantly in this population and may contribute to development of atherosclerosis,” " said Paresh Dandona, head of the Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of Western New York and senior author on the study.
