Frutarom funds research of cinnamon extract with anti-viral potential
Dated: 20 July 2007
Frutarom Industries Ltd. and Ramot, a branch of Tel Aviv University, have signed an agreement to commercialize the process of producing an extract from cinnamon that can rapidly neutralize a broad range of viruses, such as human and avian influenza.
According to a joint statement from Frutarom and Ramot, the cinnamon extract, developed by Professor Michael Ovadia of Tel Aviv University, can rapidly neutralize a broad range of viruses including herpes and the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV-1. The extract is also said to be able to boost the immune system against viruses, demonstrated by the ability to serve as a vaccination agent in chicken embryos infected with Newcastle disease virus, or known as NDV, the statement said.
Israeli-based Frutarom said it intends to market this product to the nutraceutical, functional food, health food and animal feed industries and will further develop the extract as a drug for humans and animals as part of the its natural-product offering. Frutarom said it estimates that the product will be launched in about a year.
