Overhaul: GEA decreases Unilever’s energy consumption

1 June 2006

GEA Wiegand says it has helped to streamline the production processes of one the world’s most beloved products—Marmite. Autolyzed brewer’s yeast extract had previously been concentrated from 6 to 45 % TS using two steam-heated, 3- and 5-effect evaporators—one of which was originally supplied by GEA Wiegand in 1957! So the company replaced these with single effect evaporators which use mechanical vapor-recompression technology to recycle flashed vapors to reduce energy costs.
