Green light for Unilever

1 October 2004

Unilever is the world’s most ‘sustainable’ food company, according to Dow Jones, the financial information firm. DJ published its annual list
of the world’s best performers based on environmental, economic and social issues late last month. It’s called the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). Asahi Breweries of Japan was the best performing Asian company in the beverage sector. Retailer and ingredients firm Ajinimoto narrowly missed being included in the list for the food
sector. Nestle joined the index for the first time. Other food and beverage members include Cadbury Schweppes, Danisco, Groupe Danone, H J Heinz and Diageo. North American and European companies dominate the DJSI. This perhaps reflects the importance of the infiuential green political movement.
