Easier testing for campylobacter

Dated: 1 November 2004

An American scientist has developed a new test which turns the food poisoning bacteria campylobacter bright red, making it easier to see when cultured in Petri dishes. Campylobacter colonies look like clear blobs when grown on translucent agar. Counting them can be like ‘trying to count the number of raindrops on your car’s windshield after a light rain,’ according to the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture But the ARS’s J Eric Line found that exposing the bacteria to triphenyltetrazolium chloride gave colonies a magenta colour that allows researchers to count the bacteria on light boxes or electronically. The chemical doesn’t affect the bacteria’s growth.
